It’s not just your skin that needs protection from the sun – UV rays can also damage to the eyes, leading to a range of potentially serious problems such as cataracts. Keep your eyes safe when you’re out enjoying the sunshine by wearing sunglasses with a good level of sun protection.

How to choose a pair of sunglasses

All sunglasses sold in Australia must meet the national standard of sun protection. They are also given an Eye Protection Factor from 1-10 to classify how well a lens blocks UV rays, where a rating of 10 means they provide 100 per cent UV protection. Thirdly, sunglasses should have a protection category from 0 to 4 printed on the label.

For the best protection, look for a pair of sunnies that:

  • Are classified as category 2, 3 or 4
  • Have an EPF rating of 9 or 10
  • Meet or exceed the requirements of the national standard (AS/NZS 1067:2003)
  • Absorb more than 95% UVR (or transmit less than 5 per cent UVR)
